Interesting Facts about the DRSEF

  • The DRSEF serves public and private schools in Texas Education Agency Region 10, which encompasses Collin, Dallas, Ellis, Fannin, Grayson, Hunt, Kaufman, and Rockwall counties.
  • Region 10 includes 80 school districts, 41 charter schools, 120 private schools, and all home schooled children in Dallas and its suburbs. 
  • The student population served by the fair is approximately 400,000.
  • Notable participants each year include the cities of Dallas, Plano, Richardson, Allen, Frisco, McKinney, Mesquite, Coppell, Carrollton, Garland, and Cedar Hill.
  • DRSEF students commonly dominate the state competition and have excellent international results.
  • In 2012, DRSEF students won 40% of Exxon Mobil Texas State Science Fair awards.
  • In 2012, DRSEF Grand Prize winners won 10 awards at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair.
  • In 2011, DRSEF students won all Texas State Science Fair 1st grand prizes in each division.
  • In 2010, a DRSEF Grand Prize winner won Best-in-Fair at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair.  The student’s project was displayed at the inaugural White House Science Fair and the student was invited to the State of the Union address as a guest of the President and first lady.
  • Approximately 400 volunteer judges attend the fair each year to award grand prizes, 1st-2nd-3rd prizes in science category, and special awards. These judges come from many industries, but typically have backgrounds in engineering, technology, medicine, and higher education.
  • In addition to support from hundreds of teachers helping students develop projects, approximately 100 community volunteers and schoolteachers assist in the operation of the regional fair itself each year. Teachers volunteer their own personal time and are not awarded professional development hours or paid a bonus/stipend by their districts.
  • Beal Bank generously extended their Executive Sponsorship for another three years in 2012.  Beal’s sponsorship funds all Grand Prizes, 1st-2nd-3rd prizes, a significant portion of the regional fair’s operations and student travel/accommodations at the International Science Fair.
